What are the different ways I can use a personalization tag?

There are a variety of ways that you can use personalization tags to display contact-specific information both internally in your account, and externally for that contact. You may want to do this to create unique deal titles, autofill contact information on forms, display a contact’s name in an email, and more. For more information on what personalization tags are and how they work, see this help document.

In this article, we'll walk you through the different ways you can use personalization tags in your account, including:

Email messages
Subject lines
Site messages
SMS messages
Form fields
Opt-in confirmation emails
Thank you messages for forms
Send a campaign or automation email from a Deal owner
Create unique Deal titles

How to personalize messaging

How to personalize email messages

You can use the personalize option to insert contact-specific information, such as first name, birthdate, coupon codes, and more into your campaigns and automation emails.

To get started, click on the area where you would like to add the tag and click “Personalize” from the modal toolbar:

click_personalize_option.png

Then select the tag you would like to insert by clicking it:

Select_first_name_tag.png

You can also insert personalization into your saved responses and one-to-one messages.

With the message composer open, simply type the percentage symbol (%) into the body of the message. You’ll then be presented with a menu of fields you can insert. Then, when a contact receives your email, the personalization tag will be replaced with a value specific to that contact.

How to personalize subject lines

You can use personalization tags in subject lines for campaigns, automation emails, and one-to-one emails. For example, you may want to use a personalization tag to address a contact by their first name in your subject line to get them to open.

In addition, if you are sending a campaign or automation email that includes the RSS feed block, you can use a personalization tag to insert the title of your post right into that subject line.

To edit the subject line for your campaign or automation email, open that email and click the cog on the upper right hand side of the campaign designer:

In the modal window, click the personalize icon in the “Subject” field:

Click “Select” to pull up a list of personalization options:

How to personalize forms and opt-in confirmation emails

How to auto populate form fields

You can auto populate form fields for contacts that you already have information for. For example, if you’re creating a two-part form, you can use a personalization tag to prefill the email address field on the second part of your form. For more information about using a tag to prefill information on a two-part form, click here.

For in-depth information on auto populating form fields with personalization tags, see this guide.

Note: You can only prefill text input fields and hidden fields on forms. It’s not possible to use personalization tags to pre-select values for radio button, multi-select, dropdown, or checkbox field types.

How to personalize opt-in confirmation emails

The opt-in confirmation email already uses personalization tags to customize your message with the list name, subscription date, and email address for your contact. However, you can add further personalization by addressing contacts by their first name.

To get started, go to the Forms overview page in your account and click “Edit” for your form:

How to create unique Deal titles

You can use personalization tags in the titles of your deals so that when deals are automatically created (via “Add a Deal” automation action), they can have unique names. For example, you can title a deal with the name of the contact, their organization, or any custom field you’ve created.
To get started, go to the Automations overview page in your account and click “Edit” for the automation you wish to update with this action.

click_automations_then_edit.png

If the “Add a Deal” action is not yet added to your automation, go ahead and click “CRM” > “Add a Deal” from the right side menu and drag the action to your desired spot in the automation:

Click_CRM_then_add_deal.png

In the “Add a Deal” modal, there is a Deal Title Field. Click the person icon:

In this example, I’m using the First Name and Organization personalization tags to create unique deal titles for my leads:

Complete the rest of the information in the modal pop-up and click the “Save” button. Now every contact that encounters this step in your automation will have a deal created using their first name and organization as the title.
