Statuses help you track the progress of WhatsApp conversations. With statuses, you can see unread conversations, determine which ones still need work, and which ones to mark as complete. You can also use statuses to decide if a broadcast or flow should be sent to a conversation.
By default, Broadcasts and Flows are sent only to conversations with a “Closed” status, so as not to interrupt an open conversation with an agent.
However, you can override this behavior by setting the “has_priority” option to “true” when sending a broadcast. When a flow ends with an “Assign Team” or “Assign conversation” step, the status will be “In progress,” and the conversation will be marked as unread.
Conversation statuses
| Status | Description |
| Not contacted | The contact exists but has not been contacted. |
| New | The conversation has started and is ready for an agent’s response. |
| In progress | The conversation has been answered by an agent and is currently in progress. |
| Closed | The conversation is resolved. |
| In a flow | The contact is currently inside a flow. |
Conversations can be automatically marked as closed after a set period if you enable the option in your Inbox Settings. Read Archive a WhatsApp conversation to learn more.
When a conversation is marked as “Closed”:
- Conversation tags added are locked and cannot be removed
- The conversation will be moved to the conversation history
Archive conversations after closing them. This helps keep your inbox clean and organized. Once a conversation is archived, you can use the Inbox filters to view messages that are or are not archived. Note that archiving a message does not remove it from your default Inbox view.
