WhatsApp Messaging Flows - "Update Contact" step

The “Contact update” step allows you to update and save information to contact records in ActiveCampaign. You can then use these updated field values to create segment conditions and personalize communications.

With this step, you can update fields such as:

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Email address
  • Custom contact fields

The way you assign field values depends on the field type. For text fields (text input, date, and date & time), you can write the value directly into the fields provided or use a variable.

For example, if you want to type “Guillermo” into the first name field, then every contact who goes through this step will have their first name changed to “Guillermo” in ActiveCampaign.

If you were to use a variable, you would click the lightning bolt icon, then select the variable you want to use.

For example, if you have a “Question” step in your flow asking the contact for their email address, followed by the “Create/Update” contact step, then you would use a variable in the email address field of “step.email.” Then, when the contact goes through that step, their contact record is updated with the email address they provided in the “Question” step.

For selection fields (dropdown menu, checkbox, radio button), you need to select an option from a predefined list of variables.

To configure this step:

  1. Click WhatsApp > Messaging Flows on the left menu.
  2. Edit or create a new Messaging Flow.
    • If editing a flow, click a flow > Update > Steps. Click a node (+) in the builder where you want to place the action. A modal window will appear. Click the "Contact Update" option, then click the “Add” button
    • If creating a new flow, a modal window will appear in the Flow builder. Click the "Contact Update" option, then click the “Add” button
  3. In the “Contact Update” modal that appears:
    • Click the pencil icon and give your step a name. We recommend using unique names that are short and descriptive
    • Under the “Default” tab, click the field you want to update
    • Type a value directly into the field, or click the lightning bolt and select an option
    • To update custom contact fields, click the “Custom” tab > “Add property” button
    • Click the first dropdown and select the custom field you want to update
    • Depending on the field type you select, either type the value, click the lightning bolt and select an option, or select an option from the next dropdown
