How to trigger automations to run when a contact interacts with your 1:1 emails

You can trigger your automation to run when a contact opens, replies to, or clicks a link in your 1:1 email. 

"Opens/Reads an email" trigger

When you select this trigger, you have the option to choose "1:1 email" as seen here:

Once selected, you can click the "Select email" dropdown to choose any 1:1 email or select a specific 1:1 email.

  • “Any” 1:1 email includes direct 1:1 emails sent from the Contacts overview page, a contact record, a deal record, and automated 1:1 emails
  • Emails listed by email name are automated 1:1 emails sent through the "Send a 1:1 email" automation action

When you’re done configuring the trigger, click the “Add Start” button.

 This trigger will trigger an automation only the first time the selected email is opened. This means if the contact opens the email a second time, the automation will not trigger (even if Runs “Multiple” is selected). It also means if a second recipient (the a CC’d or BCC’d recipient) opens the email, the automation will not re-trigger.

"Clicks a link in an email" trigger

 It is not possible to use this trigger with the following 1:1 emails:

  • Sent from the Contacts Overview page (with or without a connected email account)
  • Sent from a contact record (with or without a connected email account)
  • Sent from a deal record (without a connected email account)

When you select this trigger, you have the option to choose the "1:1 email" option. 

Once selected, click the "Select email" dropdown to choose a specific automated 1:1 email or “Any” 1:1 email for your trigger.

  • “Any” 1:1 email includes direct 1:1 emails sent from a deal record and automated 1:1 emails
  • Emails listed by email name are automated 1:1 emails sent through the "Send a 1:1 email" automation action 

Next, click the “Select link” dropdown and choose the link option you wish to use with your trigger.

  • “Any” link includes links contained in any 1:1 email
  • Links listed by the URL are links contained in automated 1:1 emails

When you’re done configuring the trigger, click the “Add Start” button.

  This trigger will trigger an automation only the first time the selected link is clicked. This means if the contact opens the email a second time, the automation will not trigger (even if Runs “Multiple” is selected). It also means if a second recipient (the CC’d or BCC’d recipient) opens the email, the automation will not re-trigger.

"Replies to an email" trigger

When you select this trigger, you have the option to choose the "1:1 email" option.

Once selected, click the "Select email" dropdown to choose a specific automated 1:1 email or “Any” 1:1 email for your trigger.

  • “Any” 1:1 email includes direct 1:1 emails sent from the Contacts overview page, a contact record, a deal record, and automated 1:1 emails
  • Emails listed by email name are automated 1:1 emails sent through the "Send a 1:1 email" automation action
