The Subscribe by SMS feature lets individuals subscribe to your email marketing list by texting a keyword to a phone number associated with your ActiveCampaign account. You can select a phone number to use when the feature is activated. This opt-in method does not use any SMS credits.
Take note
Contacts must supply a phone number or email address to subscribe to your list.
Set up Subscribe by SMS for a list
Step 1: Set your number and keyword:
- Click Contacts > Lists on the left menu.
- Locate the list for which you want to use the "Subscribe by SMS" feature and click the down caret.
- Select “Subscribe by SMS” from the dropdown.
- In the phone number dropdown, select the phone number you wish to use. These numbers are listed by Country.
- Enter your Keyword in the Keyword field.
Step 2: Customize your message
The message you set in this step is sent to the contact during the subscription process. Here, you can configure the process to require either a phone number or an email address for the contact to subscribe.
For phone only:
- Click the “Phone-only” toggle to set it to the “On” position.
- Type the subscribe message into the field provided. For example, you can have it say, “You are now subscribed to our list.”

For email only:
- Skip over the “Phone-only” toggle.
- Type in the first response message asking the contact for their email address. For example, you can have it say, “Please text back your email address to subscribe to our list.”
- Type the “Successfully subscribed” message into the field provided. For example, you can have it say: “You are now subscribed to our list.”
- Type the “Email address error” message. This message is sent to the contact if they do not provide you with a valid email address. For example, you can have it say, “We did not recognize a valid email address. Please try again.”
