How do I start an automation on a date or time?

To have an automation start on a specific day, you have three options:

“Don’t enter the automation until MM/DD/YYYY date”

This option won’t allow contacts to enter the automation until a date condition is met:

  1. Add a trigger to your automation.
  2. Under advanced, click “Segment the contacts entering this automation.”
  3. When the segment builder appears, select the “Date & Time” category.
  4. Select your preferred date option. This can be current day of week, current day of the month, current month, current year, or current time according to your contacts' timezones or yours.

  5. To have contacts enter this on a specific date and time, use an “AND” condition for month, day, and time.

It is important to note that in order for contacts to enter your automation through this trigger, they will need to meet your segment requirements at the time that they meet your trigger action. For example, if your trigger action is “Subscribes to List” with a segment of “Current month” is January, then your contacts will need to meet the segment requirements (current month is January) at the time that they subscribe to your list in order to enter your automation.

“Don’t do anything in the automation until MM/DD/YYYY date”

This option will allow contacts to enter the automation but they won’t proceed through it until the date condition is met. You can use this at the beginning of an automation or anywhere you want to pause the automation until a certain date:

  1. Add a trigger to your automation.
  2. Add a “Wait” action (in the Conditions & workflow category).
  3. Select “Until specific conditions are met.”
  4. When the segment builder appears, select the “Date & Time” category.
  5. Select your preferred date option. This can be current day of week, current day of the month, current month, current year, or current time according to your contacts' timezones or yours.
  6. To have contacts enter this on a specific date and time, use an “AND” condition for month, day, and time.

“Date based” automation trigger

This trigger will automatically add contacts from a list you specify into your automation as they meet the date requirements that you set. The automation can start before, on, or after a specific date. This trigger can be used for events - such as weddings and recurring transactions, such as a subscription. For instance, if you are a vendor, you can start your automation XX months before a wedding date and send a series of reminder emails. To create a date based automation that uses a date based trigger:

  1. Select the Date based trigger when you create a new automation.
  2. In the modal pop up, select if this automation will start before, after or on a particular date.
  3. Select the list that you want this automation to apply to.
  4. Program if the trigger should check daily, on weekdays only, or on weekends only and the time that it should check.
  5. Select if the automation should run yearly or once only.
  6. Click Add Start.

Once you finish building and make the automation active, contacts in your list will automatically get added to your automation.
