In this article, you'll learn the difference between split-test automations and split-test campaigns.

Take note

Access to the features below depend on your ActiveCampaign plan.

Split test campaign

A split-test campaign is created on the Campaigns page in your account. This campaign type lets you create and test up to five versions of a single campaign—each going out to a different portion of your list(s).

When creating this campaign, you can choose from two split test types:

  • Email subject lines and/or "From" information
  • Email subject lines, "From" information, and/or content

Once you have configured each version of your campaign, you can choose from two different sending options:

  • Do not determine a winner: Each campaign version will be sent to different, equal portions of your list simultaneously. You can then view the split testing reports to see which message performed the best
  • Determine a winner: Each campaign version will be sent to a different portion of your list. The winning email will then be sent to the rest of your list. You can determine the conditions for the winning email. For example, you can choose the best open rate or click rate, and time frame

Automation split action

The "Split" automation action lets you create A/B split tests within an automation. This can help you determine which marketing and sales approach works best and help you optimize your marketing and sales efforts over time.

You can also use this action to create conditional automation paths for your contacts. For example, you can send contacts down one path until a condition is met, then add other contacts down the other path.

Contacts need to proceed to this action in your automation for it to work. In addition, contacts can only participate in one "Split" action once per automation. Once a contact enters a path, they will always be on that path and it is not possible to change it.
